Moss Pure’s Story
MossPure began during an intensive startup competition at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in June 2020 (MIT Lebanon Challenge). The design behind what is today Moss Pure won First Place Startup in the competition (Track 1B Health, Energy and Waste Management).
From there, Moss Pure was invited to participate in the United Nations Development Programme, where it won Top 10 Startup in August 2020.

The Engineering Behind Moss Pure
I’m a Chemical and Environmental Engineer with two Bachelor of Science degrees (Chemical Engineering and Biology) from the University of Rhode Island. During my time at URI, I led a research team exploring the use of algae as a new biofuel source. I also combined my interests in science, sustainability, and fashion to create a high-end clothing line.
I’ve spent more than 16 years of my professional career working across environmental engineering and compliance, life sciences, biotechnology, and pharmaceuticals, including the development of products and medical devices used in hospital intensive care units to help diagnose and treat critically ill patients.
For more than eight years, I worked as an Environmental Engineer, overseeing the design, manufacturing, operation, and regulatory compliance of environmental treatment systems, including air-quality filtration, stormwater and water filtration, and industrial wastewater treatment systems. My work included overseeing a 480,000-gallon biological treatment system that used living bacteria to remove regulated pollutants from industrial wastewater generated by a plastics manufacturing facility.
My career has consistently existed at the intersection of biotechnology, engineering, environmental science, manufacturing, and highly regulated systems. I also hold multiple environmental accreditations and am a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt and Project Management Professional (PMP®).
I brought this experience together to invent, design, develop, and manufacture the engineering behind Moss Pure’s patented living moss technology, bringing biology, environmental engineering, manufacturing, and high-end design together in an entirely different way.
Moss Pure wasn’t created by simply putting moss on a wall. It was engineered from the ground up.
Why I Created Moss Pure
Throughout my career, I noticed a recurring gap. Highly engineered products were often functional but not aesthetically pleasing, while products designed around sustainability and healthier materials were too often treated as an afterthought.
I wanted to create something different, a product that combined science, function, sustainability, and high-end design rather than forcing people to choose between them.
That vision became Moss Pure.
I designed Moss Pure to transform living nature into contemporary, functional art: an aesthetically striking feature for the built environment that also provides benefits beyond its appearance. Today, every Moss Pure installation combines 100% living moss, patented engineering, custom fabrication, and sculptural design, while doubling as a patented air filter and stress relief device.
For me, Moss Pure represents the culmination of the disciplines that have shaped my career: biology, engineering, environmental science, manufacturing, sustainability, and design.
Science doesn’t have to look scientific. Sustainability doesn’t have to compromise design. And functional products can also be elevated works of art.
