The history of Moss Pure’s live moss walls.

Moss Pure was created during a startup competition in June 2020 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where the concept won First Place Startup in its track. Following the competition, Moss Pure was invited to participate in a United Nations startup program, where we were recognized as a Top 10 Startup.

During the MIT competition, we recognized a significant gap in the moss wall industry. People wanted to bring nature and the benefits of living material into their indoor spaces, but many of the moss walls available on the market were made with preserved moss rather than living moss.

Preserved moss begins as natural moss but undergoes a preservation process and is no longer living or biologically active. It can provide the appearance of natural material without watering, but it is fundamentally different from a living moss system.

We wanted to create something entirely different.

Drawing on our founder’s background in chemical and environmental engineering and biology, Moss Pure was engineered from the ground up as a system capable of incorporating 100% living moss without the irrigation, sunlight, electricity, or routine maintenance typically associated with conventional living walls.
